| I didn't stop in Elizabeth City as I was interested in getting on with my journey, given that I had spent 10 days taking Roni home to Texas, then driving back to Camden. It is only 8 miles down the river from where I was so that would have been a very short 'journey' indeed! But though I didn't stop there, I had driven thru it and had heard some of its history, so I thought I would write a little about it (a very little). This is the home of Blackbeard the Pirate. All true! He hid out in the many small coves and crannies along the Pasquatank River while not off doing Pirate Deeds. Elizabeth City being the 'end' point of the Great Dismal Swamp ICW route it is dependent on the ICW to no small extent for its survival. They have been building a large museum over the past several years, with stops and starts for the usual reasons: money. Since there is talk of the route being closed in November, 2004 - permanently, this is very sad news indeed for Elizabeth City. I certainly hope that the route remains open. True, it is for recreational boaters, and not for commercial shipping and that is a significant factor in funding any project. But to shut it down and then at some time in the future attempt to reopen it would not make economic sense. Maintenance always wins over neglect in situations such as these. Elizabeth City I will be thinking about you in the years ahead and hope that you will survive and prosper in the future. I hope to return someday. |
